Hey there! Welcome to Lissa’s World. I’m Melissa Allen, but my friends and family have always called me Lissa. I own, run and write Lissa’s World.
This blog is all about living life to the full. I write about fashion, beauty, food, good health; all the components you can think of to a full and happy life. The past few years for me have been all about learning to live as a well-rounded adult, and I hope that Lissa’s World reflects all that I’ve learned.
If you’re interested in hearing a little more about who I am as a person, then feel free to read on!
I grew up as the youngest in a large, happy family in New Haven, Connecticut. With 3 older brothers and 1 older sister I was certainly never lonely, and we always had tons of fun together. My brothers instilled in me a love for sports that made me something of a tomboy. I loved to play field hockey throughout my time at school and stayed in athletics all the way through college.
It wasn’t all about the sports, though. I loved to read and write, and started keeping blogs during my teenage years where I’d document my crushes and teen angst in great detail.
I was never top of my class, but I did enjoy school and worked pretty hard, although I’ll admit I was often a little distracted by hockey and boys. Luckily I still got decent grades, which allowed me the chance to study at my dream school- Connecticut College.
I left college 2 years ago with very little sense of the real world. That’s not to say that I didn’t learn a lot in college! My intellect certainly expanded and I grew into the person I am today, but there was plenty that I had yet to understand. I didn’t know how to cook, I didn’t know how to deck out a home and I didn’t know how to approach a variety of ‘adult’ situations. When I was faced with my first real life work interview after graduation, I was terrified.
Living away from home for the first time is scary enough as it is, but when you’re in college you have roommates that you’re set up with from the start and a schedule of classes to attend to fill your days. Pretty soon you get used to the routine of college and start to have some fun, and eventually you begin to feel settled and at home, or at least I did.
Then you get through finals, go through the excitement of graduation and suddenly you’re out in the world and things get real.
This came as a bit of a shock to me, as I said, so it took some time to warm up to reality outside of the relative safety of college. I found a job as a personal assistant in a large company and moved to a big city, but I had some growing up to do.
Thankfully, once I’d gotten a little more life experience under my belt I felt more confident and secure. Now, I like to think that I’m something of a lifestyle guru. I love decorating my apartment, throwing dinner parties for friends and showing up at work every day looking polished and professional. Lissa’s World was built to share that information with other young people who are heading out into the world, so that they can begin to feel more comfortable in themselves too.
Whether you’re looking for advice on how to clean your house without spending a fortune on a maid, or how to pick makeup that most flatters your features, you’ll find it here on my blog. When I experience a tricky situation and work out ways around it; I write about it. I find myself in plenty of difficulties, so there are tons of bases covered here!
If you want to ask me any specific questions about any of the topics I post on, feel free to ask away in the comment section. I’d also love to hear your opinions, as well as any tips you can come up with to include in my advice posts! I’m still learning every day, and am open to any and all thoughts that you might have to add.
Thanks for visiting Lissa’s World, and happy reading!
