Everybody wants their home to look swanky – when friends come over, you want them to be impressed. When parents come over, you want it to look like you’re doing well for yourself. But decorating can be expensive, and if you are on a tight budget, it can seem impossible.
But there are a few tricks you can use to make the whole process easier.
1. Start Early
As soon as you know you’re moving, or as soon as you know you want to redecorate, start hunting for those perfect items. Get a clear image in your mind of what style you want, and make a list of what you need.
Then you can start watching for those items in your chosen style right away. When you’re not in a hurry, it’s easier to wait for the good deals to come along.
2. Do the Thrift Store “Dive”
Around here, when we’re going to the thrift stores to see what treasures have come in, we say we’re “going on a dive.” Thrift stores, second-hand shops, and discount outlets can provide amazing items at crazy low prices. You can either pick up gently used furnishings that someone else doesn’t need anymore, or “last season’s” decorations that businesses are liquidating to make room for new stuff.
This is a great way to decorate on a budget.
3. Watch Social Sites
Craigslist has always been a go-to when you’re looking for home décor, and it is still a great option, but there are many other social buying and selling places you can visit.
If you search on Facebook for your city or county, plus words like “buy, sell, trade” or “classifieds,” there is a very good chance that you will come up with a handful of pages to join. These are generally packed with people selling their old furnishings, and while some of it is bound to be junk, there is also a lot of great stuff you can get a hold of.
The best part about this method is that if you have a skill or product of your own, some people may be willing to barter with you, which means you may not have to pony up any cash at all!
These are just a few ways that you can decorate a room or your entire home on a budget, and still end up with nice stuff that will impress when company comes over.
