Prednisone Facial Hair Zapped With Nair
Hello friends! I’ve been watching my hair on my face slowly grow in and form a light, fuzzy mustache and chin hairs. As anyone would, I get real up close and personal with my mirror and examine every square centimeter of my face and see that amongst the blond fuzzy hairs are some light black hairs lining my upper lip. I know that there are many women who have facial hair that may be noticeable, but this is brand spanking new to me. It is a side effect caused by an 80 mg per day dosage of the evil Prednisone.
I had informed my husband Brent to let me know when he starts to notice the facial hair, so why did I get so upset when he actually let me know the other day that my mustache is becoming visible to him? I had been asking Brent for well over a month if he was able to see my mustache and he just kept saying no. He would say not to worry about it as it is a side effect of the medication and as soon as I am able to be off of the Prednisone, the facial hair will go away. That’s easy for him to say; he’s a man and is used to having facial hair.
Well, well… wouldn’t you know that on Easter day I was informed that I might want to buy some Nair, as my facial hair was starting to become noticeable. Brent brought up the topic as delicately as possible and made sure that he stressed that it did not bother him that he could see the hair, but knew that it bothered me. Thank goodness for 24 hour/365 days a year Walgreens, as you bet your little tush I drove on out there to pick up a bottle of Nair. Easter or not, I was on a mission to regain my self confidence and my feminine face.
After a good 30 minutes of reading the information on every single product designed for hair removal in the skin care aisle, I decided on the Nair Hair Removal System Moisturizing Face Cream. I chose the Nair brand because my husband had recommended that particular brand and when reading the instructions and information on the different hair removal systems, I became more and more confused as the only difference I was able to find in any of them was the price. The Nair product that I decided on was on clearance for $3.19.
To tell you the truth, I was not as embarrassed as I thought I was going to be as I stood in the store, reviewing each and every product known to man. I think that I was more relieved than anything to finally be taking care of removing my Prednisone mustache and chin hairs. I did, however, make sure that when I used the Nair, Brent was busy playing a video game on the X-Box and sneaked around the corner of the couch with a wash cloth covering my Nair lathered face to grab my cup of coffee. As if I had to sneak… he was playing a video game… the house could be on fire end and he wouldn’t know when a video game is on!
The Nair Hair Removal System is a light pink cream that smells like perm chemicals. The directions say to lather it on thick (do not rub it in) and let it sit for 5 minutes before checking by wiping away a small area. If the Nair needs more time to sit, let it, but for no longer than 10 minutes at the most. I only needed 5 minutes for the Nair to remove my upper lip and chin hair, which was just enough time to sneak into the kitchen to grab a cup of coffee, get back into the bathroom, and take a couple of pictures for you all to see me in my weakest moments.
Drumroll…..
Wow, I feel exposed! It’s all for you guys and gals!
So, there you have it. I am not a Nair virgin anymore. My upper lip and chin are smooth as a baby’s bottom and I am feeling much better about the facial hair crisis. It is all out in the open, for the world to see… pictures of yours truly as I battle and conquer Prednisone side effects, one side effect at a time.
*Note: Please understand that Prednisone is helping me with my Lupus flare up, which has never been in a remission state. Yes, I have more side effects than I can count on both hands, however, I am alive and organs are being saved by getting the Lupus under control with Prednisone (my doctor’s final option for me at this time). I may complain and get frustrated but I am trying my hardest to see the final outcome!

Hang in there! One of the things that has been noticed in the Benlysta trials is that most patients were able to at least titrate way down on their pred and a lot of them were able to get off it completely. The company really hopes to have it on the market before the end of the year.
Posting your daily life complete with facial hair stories is an awesome comfort for the rest of us Lupies who aren’t as brave. You give me hope. :>
Hugs,
Cammie

I was on 60mg of prednisone for about 3 or 4 months and yeah the symptoms suck. There are a bunch of them… but once I was done using prednisone they all went away quickly. Except for some stretch marks I got from all the water weight and I never had facial hair before using prednisone n I have it now. It’s not as bad as it was when I was on the meds but it’s definately still there. So I guess I’m gonna nair it up! =]
